The Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) is one of Africa’s last great wildernesses. Situated in the heart of Botswana, this vast, remote expanse offers a raw and authentic safari experience. Golden grasslands stretch to the horizon, ancient riverbeds cut through the desert, and the silence of the Kalahari is truly humbling.
Covering 52,800 square kilometres, CKGR is the largest game reserve in Botswana and one of the largest protected areas in the world. Visitors often describe the feeling of being alone in an endless wilderness, where wildlife roams freely and the night sky bursts with countless stars.
CKGR is home to gemsbok, springbok, hartebeest, eland, giraffe, and during the green season, large herds gather on the lush plains. The predators are here too — including the black-maned Kalahari lions, cheetahs, leopards, and spotted hyenas.
The reserve also holds cultural significance as the traditional homeland of the San people, who still share their ancient knowledge with guests through guided nature walks and storytelling.
My favourite way to experience CKGR is through a mobile camping or semi-luxury lodge safari that gives you access to its most remote and rewarding areas.

Location:
CKGR is located in the central part of Botswana, covering a significant part of the Kalahari Desert. It lies roughly 250 km southeast of Maun, and access is typically via the Matswere, Xade, or Tsau Gates.
Best Time to Visit:
The green season (December–April) offers lush landscapes and prime wildlife viewing, especially in Deception Valley, where herbivores gather in large numbers. The dry season (May–November) offers easier driving conditions and fantastic photo opportunities in the stark, sunlit plains.
Top Tip:
The CKGR’s remoteness makes 4×4 vehicles essential. If you’re not experienced in self-driving, guided safaris are highly recommended. For a more immersive experience, opt for mobile camping safaris, which allow you to reach deeper, more secluded parts of the reserve while still enjoying great comfort.
